Bruno Senna reportedly was spotted with engineers at the Williams factory this week. One can guess it was more than a social call….

After losing his job at Lotus for the Frenchman Romain Grosjean, Bruno Senna has a good chance to close with Williams for the 2012 season of Formula 1. The English team must decide the name of the fellow Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado in the coming days. In addition to the driver, Rubens Barrichello, Adrian Sutil, the German and Russian Vitaly Petrov fighting for cockpit available.
The fact is that Bruno seems to be a step forward in negotiations with Williams. The nephew of Ayrton Senna was at its headquarters in Woking, England, in recent days, made physical assessment tests, went through a Sabbath of the technical team and lefta good impression among those who will decide the owner of the second wave. It also depends on the arrangements with their sponsors.
In addition, the leaders of the Williams Renault sought technicians, new engine supplier of the British team to gather technical information about Bruno Senna. The Brazilian ran half of last season with Renault-Lotus (now Lotus), which also uses theFrench drivers. The decision of the British team due out later this year.

Owner of the post in 2011, Rubens Barrichello was also the headquarters of the British team earlier this week. According to information collected by GLOBOESPORTE.COM,the Brazilian was not informed about a possible settlement with Bruno Senna’sWilliams. The veteran, who seeks his 20th season in the category, spent Monday and Tuesday at the factory in Woking.
So far, Brazil has only Felipe Massa secured the 2012 Formula 1 season. He joinsFerrari for the seventh consecutive season and will continue alongside the Spaniard Fernando Alonso.

Director: Asif Kapadia
Runtime: 91 min.
Verdict: Quite probably my favorite film of the year. For whatever that’s worth. Could be the greatest sports movie ever.
Genre: Documentary

Perspective is pretty much a function of time and memory. Xuxa Meneghel kissed Ayrton Senna and wished him a happy new year for each one of ‘89, ‘90, ‘91, ‘92 and ‘93. Watching an incident unfold right before us, in the present, we’re scarcely aware, until we seek the aid of time and memory and realize the nature of the event that exists beyond the mere facts. This medium, more than any other form of art, because of its images, because of its motion, because of its ability to move back-and-forth through time, because of its ability to marry its images, because of its ability to make itself heard, is that aid. Oliver Stone’s Jfk is on the board of directors when it comes to my relationship with the movies. The opening particularly, with its mesh of images (real and doctored) and sound seemingly fired out of a bunch of machine-guns, is intense in the way it overwhelms you with what “appear” to be facts (simply because they seem to have been “captured”), and which to me represents cinema at the peak of its powers to persuade and manipulate. We see Senna against the backdrop of a Brazil that doesn’t seem to have many other reasons to smile. We see him lock horns with the establishment personified by Jean-Marie Balestre and Alain Prost, both seemingly the real-life variations of moustache-twirling villains. We see him referring to God and we feel we’ve amidst us a popular revolutionary. Mr. Kapadia’s Senna might even be mistaken, especially at that juncture, as some sort of a political statement against the governing body. And yet, when we see images of their last appearance on the podium, when we see Senna embracing Prost after the latter’s final race, when we feel the air of sadness around the San Marino GP, when we see the drivers and officials and commentators under that atmosphere after Ratzenberger’s death, when we hear the voice of Pierre Van Vliet use “everybody” to unite the F1 community, when we see Prost visibly shell-shocked after Senna’s final crash, when we see Damon Hill sitting by the track, when we see Prost and many others carry that coffin, it is the humanity that overwhelmed me. Alain Prost was just as much an integral part to the Senna story as his parents, as McLaren, as the sport, and as Brazil itself. I cried like a chil9d. More than propaganda it is this ability to unite the greatest treasure of the movies.

To claim that Mr. Kapadia’s film is something of a live-action drama unfolding before our eyes is to describe the film in terms of a tense it rarely, if ever, exists in. That unfortunate day in May ’94 looms large right from the elegiac tone that announces the opening frame, and although the fact that my memory of those days is still fresh can undermine my claim, a close-up of Ayrton Senna as his mother speaks of God and danger is foreboding enough. Even in its form, as it cuts through events, as it cuts through moments, it is not an unfolding but more of a highlights package. That Mr. Kapadia layers it with voice-over and joins one event with the next automatically causes it to be a product of perspective. And it is the discovery of the nature of this perspective – political or humane – or rather the shift from one to other that informs the central drama within the film.

And just as well three tracking shots chart this shift. It is probably impossible to overstate the significance these tracking shots assume in a film as this, especially when they are historical artifacts as opposed to ones created artificially. A tracking shot as any F1 race unfolds (present tense) is just a POV shot that gives us the excitement of a first-person account. Here, with my own knowledge of past and future, some of it aided by the preceding images, a million thoughts started going through my mind transforming them into some sort of an exercise in contemplation. And yet it doesn’t, in any way, dilute the purity of that act, which at the end of the day is to drive the car as fast as possible. The ’88 Monte Carlo GP announces the central political conflict and Senna’s metamorphosis from a smiling boy-wonder to one who takes on the establishment and becomes somewhat brutal himself. It announces a fighter and at the same place announces something that isn’t entirely pretty. The ’91 Brazilian GP helps him to discover himself, make him a man more at peace, a wiser person, and move over the conflict of the preceding years. Forgive and forget. During their final ever podium finish, Senna pulls Prost into the frame. That there is everything beautiful about sports.
And that is when Senna introduces the film’s central fear thereby making the politics and corruption absolutely insignificant in comparison. That threat unites the F1 community. The San Marino GP is a monumental cinematic artifact, sure for its aesthetic but primarily because of its historical significance. Mr. Kapadia doesn’t lend it anything, no music, no voiceover. A million things went through my mind. As Senna’s car took one turn and then another and then another, and the gloom of the preceding two days are cast all over, and the inevitability of the facts awaited me, I was completely shattered. That tracking shot is a painful experience. I never saw it before, I do not know if the footage exists beyond what is shown within the film, and yet I deeply respect and applaud the compassion to shy away from sensationalizing the event, whether it is from the filmmaker or the source itself. It is a great shot followed by an even greater edit, switching from within the car to a remote viewpoint. This one-two of the tracking shot and edit lead our turmoil to witness an accident that shook the F1 community and probably saved many lives.

Back in those times when I and my brother were kids, Ayrton Senna was just as much of a sporting hero for us as Diego Maradona was. We didn’t know anything about racing, and we never probably ever even watched any race at length except for to get excited when someone crashed. Those were the times when racing cars crashing used to serve as sensational footage for introducing sports shows. And yet we loved Senna. Just as we loved Sergei Bubka. Maybe it was because the way he looked, or maybe because he won so much. I cried when the Brazilian soccer team dedicated their World Cup to him, although that is when I realized Senna hailed from Brazil. Maybe it is the purity of these actions. Senna doesn’t leave us on a note of death or with any shattering sense of tragedy, like for instance Into the Wild. It leaves us with the knowledge of Senna’s greatest competitor from his karting days. It leaves with images of Senna having fun in the waters. It shows him jumping out and probably saving Erik Comas’ life. It shows him racing. It shows him living his life. And that leaves us at peace.

Lilian de Vasconcellos

Lilian was with Senna when he started his career in the Formula Ford, in Britain; she was the only one whom Senna married officialy, in 1981; he was 21 years old, she was 19. After the wedding party, they parted to London, where they had a tight financial life; Ayrton, by pride, didn’t want to ask money to his father. In a statement included in the book, Lilian remembers his husband as a caressing person, but over concerned with his career. At the eve of races or trainings, he would rather sleeping in separated beds, to avoid the tempations of libido. In an occasion when Lilian thought she was pregnant and told Ayrton, he reacted coldly: “If you are pregnant, you will go to Brazil to raise our son”. The marriage lasted eight months. The affair with Adriane Yamin was in his early times in the Formula One.

The relationship lasted from 1985 to 1988. Daugther of an entrepreneur from Sao Paulo, she was 15 years old when they began the affair. They became engaged. Acoording to close friends of the pilot, it was a well behaved affair. At the time, Ayrton lived in Esher, in England. Adriane went there only once, in 1986, escorted by her parents and Senna’s mother. “It was not shocking for Ayrton, that epoch, to hear Adriane’s mother say that she could not travel alone; for him, a conservative, that was the right thing”, declares in the book doctor Linamara Battistella, a friend of Ayrton’s.

Adriane Yamin (linkedin)

She was just a model by the time she met Senna; during their affair, and mostly after his death, Adriane gained much space in the media, and eventually became the hostess of a variety show in less known television channels; check out here: TV Record , but be warned that she changes often; Adriane is a blonde woman, long hair, about 30 years old.

Xuxa (website)

The first weekend that Ayrton spent with Xuxa was in 1998, year when he won his first world championship. The Monday after, Ayrton arrived to visit Galvao Bueno (main sports anchorman of TV Globo, close friend of Ayrton’s) looking like a college boy in love. According to other friend, Alfredo Popesco, Xuxa was a milestone in the life of Senna. “Xuxa came at the right moment”, says businessman Marcos Jose Magalhaes Pinto, another friend.”After becoming champion, he took a weight away from his shoulders, and opened space for a relationship”. Used to having girlfriends at his feet, Ayrton soon became upset with the full agenda of Xuxa, and particularly with the influence of the career manager Marlene Mattos over her (indeed, Marlene became famous in Brazil for two reasons: her full control over the steps of Xuxa and the fact that she remained faceless, away from photographers and cameras for a long time). In the beginning of 1989, the couple was at the Airport of Rio ready to fly to Monaco when Marlene showed up and said that Xuxa won’t go; the manager and the pilot had a comic fight over the possession of the luggage; Xuxa and Ayrton eventually flew out. At the Cristimas of that same year, when Senna was feeling down because of the loss of the championship, he decided to do a suprise to Xuxa, visiting her in New York. She knocked on her door, in a Santa Claus costume. She sent him off. Senna didn’t insist, and returned to Brazil. Until Senna’s death, Xuxa would call him periodically. Rodrigues (the author) never found out what they talked, but, according to friends, the pilot appeared depressed after receiving these calls. The affair between Senna and the beautiful Cristine Ferracciu was kept away from the lightspots. They stayed together for nearly two years, between 1990 and 1991, when Senna had houses in Monaco and Portugal. The relationship started to turn bad when the pilot disliked Cristine’s decisiion to go back to Brazil to assist her mother, with cancer. Besides, the book says, Senna was acting suspicious, imposing restrictions to the contac with her friends, suspecting that they had interest on him. “Because of his suspecions, Ayrton never invited my parents to his home”,.

Eddie Irvine races a McLaren! But Senna is not amused…

The 1993 season may have been Ayrton Senna’s last as a member of the McLaren team, but it yielded some of his very best victories in the Ford-engined MP4-8 at Donington Park, Monaco and Suzuka – where the brilliant Brazilian was embroiled in controversy for the fourth Japanese Grand Prix in succession. But on this occasion the trouble spilled over long after the chequered flag had fallen.

Having won the race in magnificent style, Ayrton stormed down to the Jordan team’s garage to complain that their new driver Eddie Irvine, who had finished a fine sixth on his debut F1 outing, had messed him around as the Brazilian came up to lap him. Even worse, in Ayrton’s admittedly pumped-up view, he thought it was absolutely outrageous that the new boy had displayed the temerity of actually re-passing him during the height of their jousting. Senna was well stoked up, but Irvine was another genuine F1 tough nut and quickly made it clear that he was not interested in what the triple world champion might have to say.

There followed a typical Senna outburst. “What the **** do you think you were doing?” he asked Irvine. The Ulsterman just shrugged. “I was racing,” he replied. “You were racing?” snapped back Senna, eyes agleam. “Do you know the rule that you’re supposed to let the leaders come by when you’re a backmarker?”

“If you were going fast enough, it was no problem,” countered Irvine, absolutely refusing to back down.

Ayrton was now getting even angrier, moving closer to Irvine in a menacing manner. “I overtook you and you went off three times in front of me, at the same place, like a ******* idiot, where there was oil. You took a very big risk to put me out of the race…” The debate went on and on in the same vein, but eventually Senna lost his patience and took a swipe at Irvine, hitting the Jordan driver on the side of the head and sending him to the floor. That effectively marked the end of the debate, but Senna could count himself lucky that he did not face any sanctions for his behaviour. Most drivers would have received a harsh punishment, and it said much for his status that he escaped without penalty.

Ayrton had won the race by 11.4sec from Alain Prost’s Williams, with new boy Mika Hakkinen taking over the second McLaren seat from Michael Andretti to post a fine third place on only his second outing for the team. In fact, the McLaren management had run out of patience with the accident-prone Andretti who had only been allowed to stay behind the wheel of the MP4-8 for the Italian GP at Monza a few weeks earlier because of what his name meant in front of an Italian crowd. And he made it to the rostrum, but too late.

For most aspiring stars, third place at Monza would have seemed the crucial flicker of light at the end of the tunnel. Sadly for Michael Andretti, it was, so to speak, the lights of an oncoming train. He had gambled for high stakes and lost.

As far as Eddie Irvine was concerned, Suzuka in 1993 was the closest he ever came to a McLaren cockpit. By 1996 he would have joined Ferrari as Michael Schumacher’s team-mate and, in that position, would be cast in the role of one of McLaren’s prime rivals for the next few years until he was replaced in that prestigious job by Rubens Barrichello at the start of 2000.

In 1999, Irvine came close to winning the world championship – his title bid unquestionably aided by the fact that Michael Schumacher had broken a leg in a first lap crash during the British GP at Silverstone – but was pipped to the crown by two points by Mika Hakkinen who, in glorious fashion, repeated his title triumph of the year before.
